Roof cleaning and moss removal

Give your home a fresh, well maintained appearance with a professional roof clean and moss removal. Moss holds water against your tiles, blocks the gutters and valleys, and drops down into the downpipes. Clearing it is worth doing. Blasting it off with a pressure washer is not, and it is how a lot of roofs get wrecked by someone who meant well.
Our aim is not simply to make your roof look cleaner. It is to take the moss, dirt and debris off while putting as little stress as possible on the tiles and the roofing system underneath them. That is why we clean carefully rather than aggressively.
No pressure washing. No jet washing.
We do not use pressure washers or jet washers on your roof. The roof is cleaned manually, by hand, using professional scrapers and stiff brushes.
High pressure water strips the protective surface off concrete tiles, which makes them absorb water and grow moss back faster than they did before. It drives water up under the laps and into the roof space, and on an older or more fragile covering it will disturb defects that were sitting there quietly. A roof that has been pressure washed often looks excellent for a year and then deteriorates quickly. We clear by hand instead.
Every roof gets an MOT first
Before any moss removal or roof clean, we carry out a Roof MOT to assess the general condition of the covering.
This matters most on older properties. A roof can look perfectly fine from ground level while having deteriorated tiles, brittle felt, damaged battens or other defects underneath, and moss hides slipped and cracked tiles well. Before we put a team on the roof and start scraping, we want to know it is in a fit state to be cleaned safely. If we find anything that concerns us, you hear about it before the cleaning starts, not after.
How we clean your roof
- Roof MOT. The condition of the roof is checked before anyone begins.
- Moss and debris removed by hand. Specialist roof scrapers and stiff brushes, worked across the roof. It is slower than a pressure washer and it is the reason your tiles are still intact afterwards.
- Gutters cleared and cleaned out. Moss, leaves and debris out, so the rainwater flows the way it is meant to. This is usually where the real damage was coming from in the first place.
- Fascias and soffits cleaned down. Which is what makes the difference between a clean roof and a house that looks looked after.
- Windows washed down. The windows the work has affected are cleaned before we leave, so you are not left washing our dust off your glass.
- Waste collected and taken away. Moss, dirt and roofing debris off the property, then a final inspection and tidy up.
More than just making your roof look good
Clearing years of moss and debris can transform how a property looks, but looking after the roof itself comes first. We do not believe in blasting a roof with a pressure washer for a quick result. We take our time, inspect it first, and clean it properly by hand.

What is a Roof MOT?
A condition check of the whole roof before we clean it. We get up there, look at the tiles, the felt, the battens and the details, and tell you what state it is in. On an older roof it is the difference between a clean and an expensive accident, because moss hides slipped and cracked tiles well.
Does moss actually damage a roof?
Indirectly, yes. It holds moisture against the tiles, it lifts the laps as it grows into them, and it blocks gutters and valleys so water backs up under the covering. The moss is not the enemy so much as the water it traps.
Why not pressure wash it? It looks better afterwards.
Because it takes the surface off the tiles and forces water under the laps, and on an older roof it will disturb defects that were sitting there quietly. The roof looks great for a season, absorbs more water afterwards, and the moss comes back faster than before. We clear by hand.
Do you clean the gutters and fascias as well?
Yes, both, as part of the same job. The gutters get cleared and flushed, and the fascias and soffits get cleaned down. We wash the windows the work has affected before we leave as well.
How often does it need doing?
Every few years on a shaded or north facing roof, less often on an exposed one. Clearing the gutters is worth doing more regularly than clearing the tiles.
Will the moss come back?
Eventually, yes, on most roofs in this part of the country. Keeping the gutters clear does more to slow it down than anything else.
